ChienUniversity of California, San FranciscoPostdoctoral Fellowship1996-2000Developmental Neuroscience with Marc Tessier-Lavigne A. Personal Statement My lab studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of axon guidance, functional neural circuit assembly, maintenance and stability of neuronal networks and axon regeneration following spinal cord injury. We identify molecular guidance cues that provide directional information for axon wiring in vivo as well as signal transduction pathways and cell biological mechanisms underlying growth cone turning. We also study how specific synaptic connection patterns emerge from the interplay of molecular guidance system and neural activity to give rise to functional circuits. We study how the central nervous system responds to traumatic injury and develop therapeutic approaches to promote axonal and neuronal survival to combat degenerative disorders and improve axon regeneration and functional recovery following spinal cord injury. These projects are coherently organized in the lab, providing broad training opportunities for postdoctoral fellows and also chances to collaborate with other lab members. I worked with March Tessier-Lavigne as a postdoctoral fellow in the area of axon guidance and neural development and have established my own lab focusing on axon guidance at the University of Chicago in 2000, where I received tenure. I moved to UCSD Neurobiology in 2006 and continue to expand my research program to include functional organization of neural circuits, neurodegeneration and spinal cord injury. I am currently a full professor in the Neurobiology Section. UCSD is a highly cohesive and interactive environment, where frequent scientific discussions and collaborations take place. We have a monthly Neurodinner (which has over 30 years of history), where ongoing projects are presented by postdocs and students to the rest of the Neurobiology Section; a quarterly Neurodevelopment meeting and an annual Neural Regeneration meeting, where labs from UCSD, Salk Institute and Scripps Institute present unpublished work; weekly Neurolunch among Neurobiology faculty with research chalk talks; and many other occasions. My lab currently has five postdocs, one Ph.D. students, and two technicians. Two more postdocs are arriving in the next six months. My lab has weekly lab meetings and biweekly journal clubs. I encourage postdoc fellows and grad students to attend meetings at least once a year, such as Gordon Conference, Cold Spring Harbor, Keystone, Society for Neuroscience, Wnt Signaling Meeting, etc. I encourage trainees to take initiatives to design experiments, interpret results and write manuscripts, although I also provide guidance and suggestions along the way.
